On weekends, I usually spend my time going to cafes or walking around looking for street food with friends. Sometimes I run into problems when splitting bills with friends when the payment is made in one go. We have to calculate manually, figuring out who ordered what and how much, which becomes a hassle after every outing. "How much should I pay for this?" or "Don't forget to give your account number" are the yap we must repeat when we arrive at each other's homes.
The process of splitting bills becomes even more challenging when we visit multiple tenants and have many invoices to process. This is where I came up with the idea of creating a standalone split bill application.
This application processes bill splits, like in my case, by scanning invoices. The flow is simple, just like the app's tagline: Scan, Split, and Share!
After conducting extensive research to determine the OCR, I ended up using LLM Gemini Flash 2.0 to detect bills and process them into data ready for the system to process. For the stack I used, since I wanted to create a mobile app, I chose Flutter because it allows me to create both iOS and Android apps simultaneously. For the backend, I used Express JS and managed the deployment using Docker. This is how I started this blog about Docker.
As of the publication of this article, the app is still in development.
